Green Strategies for Building Design (ARC61804)
Tutor: Mr. Nik Syazwan Bin Nik Ab. Wahab
Project 1 | Comparative Case Studies Poster & Booklet
In a group of 5-6 person, we were required to choose two (2) case studies on the application of passive sustainable design strategies within an architectural project; 1 from tropical climate region and 1 from other climatic region (Arid, Mediterranean, Temperate Continental, Polar). Each group are expected to Identify and compare the passive design strategies applied in both case studies, including factors of; site planning, day lighting, façade design, natural ventilation and strategic landscaping and other active green design strategies (lecture topics week 2-7). We also have to further analyse and elaborate the impact of these passive strategies on the quality and spatial experience of the chosen project. As an outcome, we were to produce an A2 infographic poster and an A4 portrait booklet of minimum of 20 pages to maximum of 25 pages consisting of written text, diagrams, sketches, drawings and images.

Project 11 | Passive Green Building Strategies Report
Individually, we were required to develop passive and active green building strategies simultaneously with final architectural studio project. We were expected to have online tutorial session with our assigned respective tutors in developing our passive and active green building strategies. We were also expected to employ all passive green building strategies by our tropical building case study done in the Assignment 1 where possible, including but not limited to site planning, day lighting, façade design, natural ventilation, strategic landscaping and other renewable energies. We were to compile and documents their processes and final proposal in A3 report in .pdf format uploaded in cloud server provided.

Reflection
In Project 1, we were to analyse theories and principles of passive green building design strategies in relation to climate and culture and compare their impact on space and user experience. Through the different precedent studies, I was able to employ new sustainable design strategies to be integrated in the development of my architectural design project. I've learnt that architecture is not merely dependent on the outlook of the façade, rather how it responds to the climate and surrounding context. Overall, it was a fruitful semester thanks to the guidance of Mr. Nik throughout the weeks. One thing to improve is to also take good care of my health as I was down with food poisoning before the interim presentation and was tested positive for Covid-19 and was feeling weak days leading to submission, which has greatly affected my progress. Regardless, I had fun in the process of completing this module and have garnered substantial knowledge with regards to passive green building design strategies and their impact on spatial quality and user experience.
