Architectural Design III (ARC60408)
Tutor: Ms. Chong Sue May
Project 1 | Experiencing Space | Spatial Translations
The focus of Project 1 is "Experiencing Space". As a group of 3-4 students, we were to propose a scheme of Spatial Translation, with key consideration of spatial poetics in architecture. With an analysis of two 2 precedent studies relating to spatial poetics in architecture, we were to identify and explain different ‘modifying elements’ in architecture and how they inform spatial use and experience. Subsequently, we experimented with tectonic expressions of different spatial qualities which bring impact to the uses and experiential conditions of space, besides studying and expressing the sectional drawing in relation to use and poetics of space.
Project Outcome
Reflection
From this project which focuses on experiencing space, I had fun listening and interpreting to the audio provided along with my groupmates. From there on we chose 2 modifying elements to further explore on how they could be applied in spatial poetics and finally propose a scheme of spatial translation. I've thoroughly enjoyed each part of the process from researching, interpreting the audio, exploring the design and coming up with a written narrative under the helpful guidance of Ms. Rai who had constantly encouraged us to think further and explore. This project wouldn't be complete without the contributions of my three groupmates whom I'm very blessed and thankful to work with, namely Favorie, Siu Jean and my sister Zhi Min.
Project 2 | Experiencing Place & Memory Repository
The major project requires student to individually explore architectural response within the context of the site and programmatic requirements of a small single volume public building for memory repository. The purpose is to showcase interpretive material related to the context/ place. Emphasis is given to design resolution integrating site, program and spatial poetics.

Project Outcome
Reflection
From Project 2A, we were to first conduct a historical research and site analysis as a driver for architectural development before identifying the key characters of place that would form inspiration in the design, which we will then present a design concept for a Memory Repository derived from the issues discovered. The design concept is further explored and developed in Project 2B along with workshop activities to be completed every week. Throughout this project, I've learnt a lot in terms of identifying the characters of the place, spatial planning and delving deeper in structural design through digital modelling. Though there are more to improve on in terms of the design, I'm thankful to have Ms. Sue May who has patiently guided me throughout the weeks and gave helpful advice for my design. Overall, I'd hope to improve more on my in digital modelling and translating spatial poetics effectively into the different spaces but I am glad to have tutors who gave helpful feedbacks and lecture materials for me to learn and apply in my future designs.
