Project 1 | Diagramming Architectural Principles | Group Assignment

In this assignment, we were required to explore architectural design through the abstraction of 2-dimensional and 3-dimensional composition of space. Through the process of abstracting and simplifying an idea, we were to acquire the skills of effective diagramming of architectural principles and investigate how architecture and spaces are formed from establishing design intentions and the making of architectural elements. By the end of the assignment, we were to produce diagrammatic models in addition to our diagrammatic drawings. In this context, my group, group 1B has chosen to delve further into W-House by Uchida Architects as our key building.

Reflection

Upon completion of this assignment, I was able to learn and analyse more about W-house as well as its unique composition of spaces and the careful considerations in various context through diagramming. As this is my first exposure to diagramming, I find that it is not easy to create an effective diagram without much practice. However, I did enjoy the learning process with my tutor, Ms. Alia and my groupmates.

Project 2 | Designing with Architectural Principles + Materiality : Architectural Folly
| Group Assignment

In this project, we were to produce design possibilities through the use of architectonics in a simple architectural form, space and function besides establishing a basic understanding of materiality and detailing as means to encapsulate experiential qualities of the design. With a maximum volume of 125m³, We were to design an introspective architectural folly through an exploration of the architectural principles we have garnered from Project 1, the types and effects of timber in architectural spaces as well as the possible spatial qualities through an understanding of the tactile and tectonics of timber for self-contemplative spaces. By the end of the project, we were to produce diagrams, drawings and models to demonstrate our design process and outcome.

Reflection

Upon completion of this assignment, I am glad to learn more about the materiality and detailing of timber in addition to the ways I can apply it to create different experiential qualities for my contemplative space. I am thankful to have Shannen as my group mate for this assignment as she has always encouraged me and assisted me in everything especially the design exploration process. Though there are plenty to improve on, for instance the diagram drawings, I still had a lot of fun throughout the process under the guidance of my tutor, Ms. Alia and has learnt a lot from in terms of the exploration of spatial qualities, materiality, design form and so much more.

Project 3 | Designing with Architectural Principles + Materiality + Context + User :
Tropical Solitary Haven | Individual

In this assignment, we were to design a solitary haven at Subang Ria Recreational Park within the built-up space of 100sqm that accommodates 2 people ( my sister and I ) comfortably. We were to ensure that our solitary haven corresponds to our immediate site context in creating a relationship between our architecture and context unique to its landscape and activity. Demonstration of our design intentions through the application of architectural principles, materiality and constructability of our structure is crucial in forming a memorable spatial experience for the users.

Reflection

Upon completion of this assignment, I am exposed to the technicalities of site-specific designs through site analysis, the notions of space, form and function in architectural design and the importance of understanding user-specific design requirements. The workshops provided were immensely beneficial in understanding the design criteria as well as understanding the explorations of design. I am grateful to have the guidance of our seniors throughout the process of designing. It is a pity that we were not able to conduct a site visit as I would have understood my context better instead of looking through Google images or images taken by seniors. Nevertheless, I am grateful to have the aid of the Internet for the references as well as providing online platforms such as Zoom where we were able to interact with our seniors and tutors. I have learn a lot under the guidance of Ms. Alia who has so patiently assisted me along the way, which has helped a lot in the improvisation of my design. Thinking back, I would hope to explore more on the design as well as the concepts as I find myself struggling to come up with a bold design without worrying about the practicality of it. Needless to say though, I did enjoy every process of it from the exploration, design, and to seeing it come into fruition.
